Welcome to ArtMail for April 8, 2009! Spring time marks the beginning of fishing and gardening seasons and at the Arts Council, it is the start of our “grant season.” Applications for Artists’ Creation Grants and Arts Learning Grants are due on May 1 and the deadline for Community Arts Grants is June 1.
We’re excited to add another opportunity to the upcoming deadlines: The Art Jobs Grant Program. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Art Jobs grants will non-profit arts organizations whose jobs are in jeopardy or have been lost as a result of the current economic climate. The Council expects to fund 25-30 organizations with one-time grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. The guidelines are posted on our website and the application will be available soon.
The arts sector is proud to be the first in the nation to get economic stimulus money to its constituents—successful Art Jobs grant applicants will receive their checks in early August.
For other funding news, job openings and calls to artists, be sure to check out the Opportunities section below.
Quotable: "I believe art has to take responsibility, but it should not give up being art." (Thomas Kinkade, American painter, b. 1969)

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S BLOG - According to my 5-second research project on Google it was Georges Santayana who first said, "those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it." This quote is on my mind these days as we get closer to the April 9th release of the report from the Council on the Future of Vermont (CFV) in the Vermont State House. For those of you are unable to attend this "pre-summit conference" please make plans to attend the May 11th day-long Summit on the Future of Vermont at the Dudley Davis Center at the University of Vermont. The April 9th pre-summit is free; the summit in May requires a registration fee, but should be well worth it. Read more
ARTS ACHIEVEMENT DAY SURVEY - Nearly 100 arts advocates attended the annual event at the State House on March 25th. If you were among them, please take a minute to fill out a short and fast online survey. We value your opinion and your input will help us plan for future events.
WE'RE ON FACEBOOK - Become a "fan" of the Vermont Arts Council and The Art of Action on Facebook. The Council has joined the social networking world, and we invite you to become part of our online family. It's also a great way to stay up-to-date on news and events while networking with fellow "fans" of the Council.
ECONOMIC STIMULUS FUNDING: "ART JOBS GRANT PROGRAM" - The Arts Council is receiving $250,000 in federal stimulus funding to support a competitive, one-time grant program called Art Jobs. Part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, this program will fund jobs in non-profit arts organizations that are in jeopardy or have been eliminated as a result of the current economic climate. Although the application is not yet completed, we have posted guidelines on our website. Read more

ARTS AND SMARTS - At a time when educators are preoccupied with standards, testing, and the bottom line, some researchers suggest the arts can boost students' test scores; others aren't convinced. When poet and national endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia gave the 2007 Commencement Address at Stanford University, he used the occasion to deliver an impassioned argument for the value of the arts and arts education."Art is an irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world," said Gioia. "There are some truths about life that can be expressed only as stories, or songs, or images. Art delights, instructs, consoles. It educates our emotions." Read more

VYOA MUSIC DIRECTOR TROY PETERS ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE - Troy Peters, Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association, has announced that he is leaving the organization at the end of this concert season.
