| Featured Grantee: Albany Community School |
Albany is a small town just north of Craftsbury and south of the Lowell Town Forest. It is not a prosperous community. The Albany Community School, grades K-8, has less than one hundred students. Twice a week, those students have Physical Education with Peter AuClair. For three weeks each year, Peter teaches dance. "I'll teach a few basic steps," says Peter. "They'll learn a cha-cha-slide move and some Cupid shuffle, and they'll create some work of their own." This year, an Artist Residency grant helped to bring Karen Amirault to the school every day for a week. Karen is on the Arts Council's Teaching Artist Roster. The residency ended with an evening performance. And, a little bit of magic happened. Read the rest of this week's profile. |

Tropical Storm Irene's Unwanted Offspring: In the nearly nine months since Tropical Storm Irene ravaged Vermont, much has been reported about the outpouring of support for those impacted and the speed and efficiency with which communities and state agencies (particularly the Agency of Transportation and Commerce/Community Development) responded to the destruction of roads, bridges, neighborhoods, and foliage/holiday-season tourism. Those efforts were truly outstanding, and continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Looking at the huge swaths of Rte. 107 along the White River that were affected and rebuilt within a few short months gives anyone driving a sense of awe about what Vermonters accomplished. Whither the Non-Profit Arts Sector? A recent post by Brooklyn Philharmonic CEO Richard Dare set the nonprofit arts world all abuzz. It gave a lot of statistics about the number of orchestras that are failing and the general fragility of the non-profit art sector-in short, the kind of alarm-ringing I, for one, have heard since the early 1970s when I began my career in the arts. | Guest Blog: Keeping up with the Bellamys |
|
This week's guest blog comes from Donald Rae. Donald is the Executive Director of Focus on Film, the organization that presents the annual Green Mountain Film Festival. He teaches screenwriting at Burlington College, Vermont.
The actor Ralph Bellamy had a long and distinguished career. In 1921, at the age of 16 and having been expelled from school for smoking, he ran away from home to join William Owen's company of traveling Shakespearean Players. By the end of a lean and itinerant decade, he had made his debut on Broadway and, two years after that, his first screen appearance in a now forgotten picture called THE SECRET SIX, which also happened to feature a rising star by the name of Jean Harlow. Harlow -- the original "blonde bombshell" -- was dead at 26; Bellamy showed signs of going on forever. Like so many many actors -- like so many artists -- Bellamy never retired. (An argument, I would suggest FOR, rather than against, a career in the arts.) Read the rest of Donald's blog here.

| Featured Grantee: Bhatki Ziek |
|
Bhakti Ziek stood at her loom many hours each day for several months. She wove six panels. Each panel contained 7,000 picks. When Bhakti described the process she said, "That meant throwing the shuttle 42,000 times. One inch of the panel had 80 picks and I can do about 300 picks in an hour. I don't call it tennis elbow, I call it weaver's elbow." She remained inspired by the thought of a vivid blue sky and her concept of the viewer being completely enveloped in the work. Bhakti is a textile artist, working in this medium since 1969. Read the rest of this week's profile.

| This Week's Blog from Judy Chalmer: VSA Vermont |
|
"Welcome to VSA Vermont's audio tour of the Engage exhibition. Here language leads to midnight blue, an iridescent orb of misty light, crinkly stems, a downcast eye, clarity and intensity of pigment, the play of light and shadow, the imprecise edges of a forest, vertical strokes like blades of grass, delicate points, angular edges, undulating arms, geometric shapes, panes of color thick and rich, a sense of aliveness like the swarming of a hive. Here you can listen to all the artist statements and to descriptions of 22 works of art."

Compromises were made. One lane of Main Street had to be opened occasionally so the steady stream of gravel trucks could pass through. That was the situation at the 19th annual New World Festival in Randolph, held exactly one week after Hurricane Irene hit Vermont.

| Featured Grantee: VT Symphony Orchestra |
"Some audiences are more seasoned." Those are the words of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra's Development Director Mike Peluse. He was talking about considerations that are made in setting up the Made in Vermont Tour each year. "For some audience members, this may be the only classical program they have ever heard."
The challenge is creating a program to play in eight different towns (Johnson, Vergennes, Derby Line, Lyndonville, Bellows Falls, Randolph, Woodstock, and Castleton). One commissioned piece is always included. "We look for a composer with a strong connection to Vermont. Audiences vary widely in their experience with orchestral music, so that one connection is very important. After his three-year residency with the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Rob Paterson really had that." Read more. |

USING THE LEFT HAND: It was said of Maestro Eugene Ormandy that his was the most expressive right hand in classical music. As music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra he could pull more lush sound out of 110 players-particularly string players-with just his right hand than anyone else on the planet.
A short man, accustomed to getting his way, he spoke softly, wielded a small stick and demanded perfection from every musician that worked under his direction. His left hand, for the most part, hung by his side and only rarely made a small gesture to players to indicate their cue. These, however, were nearly always invisible to the audience. | Featured Grantee: Thatcher Brook Primary School |
Community. Collaboration. Engagement.
None of these are unusual words in a grant application. They are key components in many art projects. An accidentally well-timed project funded by an Arts Learning Grant brought all of these elements into sharp focus late last year.
For two years, the Council has funded a lantern parade in Waterbury. The first year's grant went to Thatcher Brook Primary School; the second year's to the school district. "We got such good feedback," said art teacher MK Monley. "We wanted to draw in more of the community, and one way to do this was to involve more schools." Read more.

| Blog: Vermont: The State of the Arts, 2012 |
(From Executive Director, Alex Aldrich...This post first appeared in the Burlington (VT) Free Press, January 1, 2012)
I am frequently asked, what is the current state of the arts? My response?
Vermont.
Vermont is the State of the Arts.
2010 Census figures are not available, but based on 2000 data, Vermont is first in writers, seventh in visual artists, and fifth overall in the per-capita ratio of artists-to-citizens out of all 50 states. I believe, however, that visual artists are extremely under-reported in Vermont, and that once the 2010 data is out we will find ourselves ranked first overall. Read the rest of Alex's blog here.

| Attention Arts Management Professionals... |
| We believe strongly that the health of the arts sector depends on ongoing professional development. In the coming year, as the Cultural Data Project comes online here in Vermont, we believe the need for relevant training in core management skills will be more vital than ever. Thus, we are pleased to note that Marlboro College's 20-week (every other Friday) "Certificate in Non-Profit Management" training program is now open for the winter session. Pick your location: Montpelier (Vermont College of Fine Arts) or Brattleboro (Marlboro College Graduate School). The course starts January 20th and tuition is a very reasonable $1350. Yes, financial aid is available. Please click here for more information. |
| Blog: Creative Placemaking--Making future treasures |
I recently read a white paper on Creative Placemaking, written by Ann Markusen of Markusen Economic Research Services and Anne Dadwa of Metris Arts Consulting. "Creative Placemaking serves livability, diversity, and economic development goals. In Creative Placemaking, partners from public, private, non-profit, and community sectors strategically shape the physical and social character of a neighborhood, town, city or region around arts and cultural activities. Creative Placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire and be inspired." It is with great sadness that the Vermont Arts Council community extends its condolences to the Stone family on the passing of their family member, former Vermont Poet Laureate Ruth Stone, on November 19th. Although obituaries have appeared, documenting her long and sometimes very painful life, from England to Los Angeles, we believe there is no one better to pen an appreciation of her and her poetry than Sydney Lea, who became Vermont's current Poet Laureate, in a ceremony on November 4, 2011.
